What is COACHE?
The Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education is a research-practice partnership and network of peer institutions dedicated to improving outcomes in faculty recruitment, development, and retention.
FIU is partnering with COACHE to administer the Faculty Job Satisfaction survey, which provides actionable data about the conditions--the environment, policies and practices--that support faculty doing their best work. All FIU tenure-line and full-time term faculty are being asked to participate.
Survey Administration and Data
COACHE collects data confidentially, only using identities to send reminders to non-respondents, which are not revealed to FIU. Data are analyzed by the COACHE team at Harvard. Only aggregate results are shared with FIU administrators and faculty, and only when there are a sufficient number (at least five) of responses to protect the anonymity of respondents. FIU has participated since 2011, with the survey being administered in 2011, 2014, 2017, and 2020 (prior to the pandemic shutdown).
How We Use COACHE at FIU
Results from the survey are compared to 110 cohort institutions and 5 peer institutions, and measure faculty satisfaction across 25 benchmark areas.
COACHE 2011 revealed that FIU faculty named a lack of mentorship as one their concerns. The Faculty Mentor Program (FMP) was created in 2012 in response to this concern.
COACHE 2014 indicated that the FMP was effective in increasing faculty satisfaction with mentoring. Also, FIU surpassed its selected peer institutions in terms of satisfaction with mentoring.
COACHE 2017 results indicated that mentoring continued to be a strength at FIU, but that an area of concern for faculty was the lack of clarity concerning the tenure and promotion process. In response, the University Tenure and Promotion manual was revised, and the Office of the Provost required that all colleges and departments clarify and concretize their tenure and promotion guidelines by Spring 2020.
COACHE 2020 indicated improvement in the clarity of tenure expectations and policies.
